How "green" fanatics stop America drilling for its own oil. An incredible story! COMMENT, by Jeff Mazzella

Do you believe that gasoline should cost $8.00 per gallon? What if it cost $100 to fill up your car? Do you think gasoline should be so expensive that only rich people can afford to drive on a daily basis? Are we talking about some far-fetched apocalyptic fantasy? Nope! We're talking about REALITY! We're talking about the world as it is TODAY for many people in Western Europe. And we're talking about a vision of the FUTURE for the United States as seen through the eyes of Al Gore and the radical environmental movement! Indeed, if Gore had his way, electricity in this country would be rationed. Blackouts and brownouts would be routine. Americans would only be allowed to use electrical appliances during certain hours of the day. (Your allotted time is 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.) And Americans would be forced to give up their automobiles for bicycles. Anyone who has traveled abroad will testify to the fact that the streets of small cities and towns in Western European countries are crowded with them... bicycles as far as the eye can see... as well as people simply walking to their destinations. Yes, there is access to public transportation, but not many automobiles. And why? The raw price of gasoline in Europe is the same as it is in the United States. The difference is, in most European countries, TAXES escalate prices at the pump dramatically. For example, in France taxes account for about 70 percent of the pump price. Of course, one could logically make the argument that lowering taxes would encourage more people to drive and actually increase government revenues. But then again, maybe it's not really about increasing government revenues... sometimes the heavy hand of government uses taxes to discourage certain behaviors! If you look at the rest of the world today, you see how it could be in the United States and you can see how the radical environmentalists want us to live. Did you know -- it may shock you to learn -- that according to some estimates, over 80% of our nation's recoverable oil is still in the ground. Why? Because the greenies have bullied the federal government for more than 30 years into passing regulations that make it impossible for us EVER to break our dependence on foreign oil. The Wall Street Journal put it this way: "Just about everyone claims the U.S. must urgently become 'energy independent,' yet at the same time just about every policy that may actually serve that goal is met with environmentalist opposition." Columnist Jordan McClintock was more blunt: "These people don't really love trees and animals and spring flowers. They just hate America. This is the same bunch that wanted us to lose the Cold War. They believe we're a wicked nation and that we're too rich and self-indulgent and hate the poor. They long for the day when we will be a third world country." It's time to stop the radical environmental movement! It's time to tell Congress that our nation's 30-year policy of giving in to extortion and blackmail by fringe environmental groups must come to an end! Americans need jobs. Americans need affordable oil. And, as a matter of national security, we must reduce our dependence on foreign oil from countries like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. It's time to tell Congress: Enough is enough! Kick the greenies out of Washington and pass laws to make America energy independent. And Now, Even The Courts Are Getting Into The Act! Have you heard about the latest lunacy in this on-going saga? It's just another example of how the environmentalists win battles -- and how they just may win the war to bring America to its knees. Recently, in Alaska's Beaufort Basin, scientists identified one of the richest oil reserves yet discovered. This is a find they estimate could produce 8.2 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 27.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Excited over the sheer magnitude of this find, a Mineral Management Study (MMS) was commissioned to make certain the drilling would not endanger any living creature or upset the ecology of the area. The MMS study cost $20 million dollars and, among other things, studied the feeding and migratory patterns of the bowhead whale. This exhaustive study found that drilling would have "no significant impact" on the ecosystem. It looked like gas prices would begin to drop and life would soon return to normal. But that wasn't good enough for the wild-with-fury greenies. Enraged, they went to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals -- their favorite gaggle of Left-Wing judges -- and argued that the MMS study was "incomplete," that it didn't contain sufficient data on -- of all things -- the bowhead whale. Of course no amount of data would have been sufficient and no study would ever have been complete for these folks. And within a week, the Court had granted their ridiculous motion and stopped the project dead in its tracks. It should be noted that the Ninth Circuit is the most notorious federal court in the entire system. Year in and year out, it's consistently the court whose decisions are reversed most by the U.S. Supreme Court. Indeed, it is arguably the most ideological and irresponsible appellate court in our nation's history. Of this shameless manipulation of the system, the Wall Street Journal said: "To see this trend at work, look north to Alaska, where lawsuits are blocking an offshore drilling program. Last week, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted an emergency stay that will suspend all operations until... the court will hear full arguments. The decision noted that the litigants-- environmental pressure groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council -- had shown a 'probability of success on the merits.' Uh-oh." The governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, called the court order, "a threat to our economic future." And she's right. A find this large could drive down the price of oil significantly, and create thousands of American jobs. And that may be just the reason why environmental groups are digging in their heels -- to stop America from solving its energy crisis and remain the world's only superpower. Same Story, Different Day... But these idiotic antics shouldn't shock you. It's really just the same old story. Last year the greenies -- led by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) -- were swarming over Capitol Hill, shrieking hysterically that Congress was about to poison the entire planet by responsible exploration and drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). If you heard only the WWF, you'd think that ANWR is some pristine area of wilderness. It's not. In fact, it's a barren frozen wasteland. If you heard only the WWF, you'd think the plot of land in question was at least the size of Canada. In fact, it was a tiny piece of ANWR, a mere 2,000 acres. To give you some idea of how small it is compared to all of the Refuge: If ANWR were the size of a tennis court, the parcel would be the size of a magazine. If ANWR were the size of the floor of the U.S. Senate, the parcel would be roughly the size of a letter. If ANWR were a football field, the parcel would measure two feet wide and three feet long. WWF also tried to say that the amount of oil involved wasn't worth the trouble: "The relatively small amount of oil likely to be found within the refuge doesn't justify the damage that would be done to this special place. Drilling in the refuge is not the answer to America's energy problems. It would not appreciably reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil and could not insulate the United States from short-term volatility in the world oil market." That was an outright LIE! According to experts, Alaska could produce over 33 percent of America's domestic oil production alone. Goodbye, Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, Khadafy, and the Saudis. The Help Save the Arctic National Refuge website claimed that drilling in this particular place would destroy wildlife: "There are some places that should be off-limits to oil drilling and industrial development, and the Arctic Refuge is one of them. Drilling would not reduce gas prices or alleviate our dependence on foreign oil..." That was another outright lie! As for the Chicken Little claims that exploration would destroy the wildlife in ANWR, one need only look to nearby Prudhoe Bay, Alsaka. Since the drilling in the Prudhoe Bay development in Alaska, the caribou herds in that area have increased from 3,000 in 1978 to over 32,000 today. Moreover, these herds migrate directly through the oil fields. As for reducing our dependence, we're talking about 33% of our current needs. It's not that the greenies object to the drilling and refinement of oil. They just don't like us drilling where THERE IS OIL! Ask Yourself This. Who is sitting on the oil and controlling the destiny of the United States? Perhaps the most important single figure is Hugo Chavez, the communist dictator of Venezuela. Chavez has single-handedly turned his little oil-producing country into the most dangerous nation in the hemisphere. He has modeled his regime after Fidel Castro's Cuba -- totalitarian, repressive and merciless. He has stripped the national assembly of most of its powers and is ruling by executive fiat. He has driven foreign-owned companies from the country and confiscated their assets. He has nationalized private-owned industry. He has shut down Venezuelan TV because commentators have criticized his regime. And he explains his "revolution" as "a war of the people against imperialism." (Guess who the imperialists are!) His reign has been characterized by corruption, unemployment and rampant crime. And he is now in the international arms business. Oh yes. In case you've forgotten, he's the one who came to the U.N. and said the following about the President of the United States: "The devil is right at home. The devil -- the devil, himself, is right in the house." "And the devil came here yesterday. "Yesterday, the devil came here. Right here. Right here. And it smells of sulfur still today, this table that I am now standing in front of." This raving, strutting, tin-horn tyrant exerts too much power over the United States of America -- and will continue to do so as long as we're dependent on his oil. Maybe that's why the greenies love him so much. Now is the time to break loose from him and the rest of the oil-producing countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran.
