I read the New Testament for myself (a Catholic version of the Bible) in England in 1981 and saw that Catholicism was not right, but that salvation was by faith in Christ alone. But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons...men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. (Forbidding to marry, as the Roman Catholic Church does, is a doctrine of demons.)
