An ‘aura’ is a distinctive atmosphere as in an ‘aura of mystery’ ; special quality or air around something or someone. But in paranormal, New Age circles an aura is:
- A supposed coloured emanation surrounding someone
- Coloured field around someone’s head
Is this in the Bible? No. Not a biblical term. No one in the Bible saw auras. Moses’ face glowed after he had been with God on the mountain, but everyone could see that, not a few special people.
When we went to Spiritualist churches before we became Christians, instead of ministers and preachers of the gospel, they had mediums who claimed to see people’s invisible auras.
When we were delving into the New Age, people claimed to see Alan’s aura. A medium in Aldershot claimed to see an aura around me when I went to write a feature about her. New Age? New Dark Age.
When we came to know that the Bible was true and the Lord Jesus was real, and that we were rotten sinners bound for Hell, we had to repent of all involvement with the occult. That included many things.
I wondered about the yoga class I had recently joined and I asked a black Methodist pastor if it was OK. He said: ‘It is demonic eastern religion. The exercises are all acts of worship to false gods.’
That was enough for me. I never went back to the yoga class. The ‘Salute to the Sun’ exercise was a clear act of worship to the ‘sun god’. But even worse was the last 10 minutes of class when we laid on our mats in the dark, totally relaxed every muscle and let our minds go blank. Then the teacher would say something like: ‘You’re on a beach looking out and there is a light. Follow the light.’ Pure mysticism – opening our minds to whatever, we knew not what. Nothing good, that’s for sure.
The Bible tells us to meditate on scripture, the Word of God. It never tells us to let our minds go blank.
The Lord Jesus spent a lot of His ministry time casting out demons. The New Zealand evangelist Barry Smith always had a time of ministry after his marvelous gospel preaching. Sometimes he would have a bunch of people at the front who had been involved in occult things including yoga, martial arts, Freemasonry, Ouija boards etc. He would lead them in a prayer turning to Jesus Christ, putting their faith in His atoning death, burial and resurrection – and then in a prayer renouncing every involvement with the occult in any form.
At one meeting he said something like: ‘Satan and every demon get out now in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Come out on the breath.’ And he would tell the people – just breathe out.’
Turning to Jesus means turning away from the bad stuff. It has to be dealt with – renounced and got rid of.
And if you think there is some good in any of the paranormal, remember that Satan comes disguised as an angel of light. You are playing with fire and no good will come of it, though it may seem good at first. The end will be very bad. We have seen this in our own lives and other people’s.
If you play with fire, you will get burned.
